How to choose the best photo for your puzzle

Which photos make great jigsaw puzzles? Resolution, light, colours and motifs explained, with a quick checklist.

Start with the original file

Photos sent through messaging apps or social media are compressed and lose detail. Use the original from your phone or camera. On iPhone, share as “Actual Size”; on Android, pick the file from your gallery rather than a chat.

Resolution: how many pixels do you need?

As a rule of thumb: 100 pieces needs about 1500 × 1050 px, 300 pieces 2500 × 1800 px, 500 pieces 3000 × 2100 px and 1000 pieces 4500 × 3200 px. Most phone photos from the last few years meet even the largest size.

Light and sharpness

Daylight photos with sharp focus print best. Dark or blurry photos look even darker and softer once printed on cardboard.

What makes a photo fun to build

Puzzles are more enjoyable when every area has something to look at: varied colours, textures and details. Large areas of plain sky, white walls or one solid colour are hard to build, which suits experienced puzzlers but can frustrate children.

Quick checklist

Original file · sharp focus · good light · plenty of colour and detail · main subject not too close to the edges (a small part is lost at the border).
